Post-Paradise Memories and Thanks

While attending our annual AAML national meetings in Chicago in early November, we watched as my hometown of Paradise, California burned to the ground in mere hours. My 80-something parents lost everything. My sister’s, Christine, family saw their home singed but spared.

Through AB 2044, The Legislature Enhances Child Custody Protections In Cases Involving Domestic Violence

Domestic violence (“DV”) is a potential game-changer in child custody contests. In 2014’s Assembly Bill (“AB”) 2089, the Legislature expressly declared, among other findings, “[t]here is a positive correlation between [DV] and child abuse, and children, even when they are not physically assaulted, suffer deep and lasting emotional, health, and behavioral effects from exposure to [DV].” (Uncodified section I of AB 2089.)

Family Code sections 3020, 3011 and 3044 in pertinent part address DV in child custody cases.

Ruston Imming Achieves

Ruston Imming was recently named by the State Bar's Board of Legal Specialization as a Certified Specialist in Family Law. Achieving Certified Specialist status is a major mid-career accomplishment. The designation reflects a level of substantive knowledge, dedication and achievement demonstrated by only the top family law attorneys.

Herring Law Group supports a variety of family- and family law-related charitable organizations. Prominent among them are Casa Serena, in Santa Barbara, and Levitt Quinn, in Los Angeles County. Casa Serena's mission is to "help women and their families recover from addiction by providing evidence-based treatment services while building community, instilling self-determination, and empowering them with educational opportunities and financial literacy.

Erin Schaden Attends the Annual AFCC Conference In DC

Erin Schaden, Herring Law Group’s Executive Director, recently attended the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts’ (AFCCnet.org) Conference in Washington, DC. HLG is a member of the AFCC, which is the “interdisciplinary, international association of professionals dedicated to improving the lives of children and families through the resolution of family conflict.

Deanna Cerda was one of Herring Law Group’s initial employees, back when we were still putting up office walls and working from folding tables (our nice modern furniture was originally on back order!). She is now our Legal Administrator, her duties having expanded along with HLG’s presence and standing.

Amethyst Ball at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara

Herring Law Group is proud to have recently attended and sponsored the 32nd annual Amethyst Ball at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara in Santa Barbara, benefiting the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (CADA). CADA was established in 1949 by a small group of Santa Barbara citizens.

Another Successful Annual Trial Basics Seminar

Our AAML Southern California Chapter presented its fourth annual Trial Basics Seminar in Costa Mesa on April 13, 2018. As before, it was free to all 100 attendees, who came from all corners of Southern California. This year’s TBS was better than ever, and I am honored to remain its Dean.
